Do I need sunglasses in winter?

I was watching my girls netball on the weekend and was surprised how few people were wearing sunglasses. Just because the sun is not as bright, or hot, does not mean that we do not need to protect our eyes from harmful UV rays. There are a number of reasons why we should be wearing our sunglasses in winter. One big reason is that the sun is lower and so we are may be more exposed to direct UV light in winter than in summer. There is also a common assumption that the sun is not as dangerous in winter as it is during summer. However, even if the sun is not shining, its harmful UV rays are ever-present. So, remember, when you are watching sports , or are just outside, wear your sunglasses to protect your eyes.
